I often Ponder in Minnesota
- Updated: November 3, 2013
The Vikings have added a ton around him so there are no more excuses for Christian Ponder. It is time to show everyone in the league, why Minnesota drafted you at the 12 spot in 1st round. This is the crucial 3rd year, the typical year for QB’s to become men among the boys, and to show their worth on the field as leaders and warriors for their team.
Greg Jennings was a great pickup, with excellent career numbers and his 7.5 TD avg/ year. Jennings adds immediate trustworthiness to the Minnesota Vikings WR corps. He brings leadership to a young WR group in Minnesota, and a beyond solid target for Ponder to hit.
Losing Percy Harvin was a huge loss, with his 7 catches/game and big play ability. Harvin wasn’t happy with the course and didn’t feel secure in Ponder, which was stated in the past. But in return the Vikes get 300 lb DT Sharrif Floyd, big CB Xavier Rhodes and speedster Cordarrelle Patterson, all of whom have bright futures ahead of them, in my opinion.
He has an tremendous offensive line, some fast wide receivers, including the aforementioned, Cordarrelle Patterson, who has wheels, with huge big play ability. Ponder gets a bad rap, he brings a lot of good things to the table as well, like accuracy and pocket presence and running skills. The undervalued and underrated Jarius Wright, who will be better than many, may expect. Pro bowler TE, Kyle Rudolph, with his TD game, who has shown he can play the game.
Then of course, the reigning MVP of the league, Adrian Peterson. Seriously, this team has many strong points; they should be improved, on paper, than last years 10 win season. I will not use the overdone expressions, that Ponder just needs to manage the game, but more frankly, he needs to play dependably. He had shown signs of excellent play at times, with 270 in a win vs Jacksonville and 71% passing with 258 in a win vs Tennessee and especially against Green Bay at the end of the season, 234 and 3 TDs 0 int.
Will Christian Ponder ever be a pro bowl or all-star QB, not likely, not as long as Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, RG3, Eli Manning, Matt Ryan, Russell Wilson, even Jay Cutler are all playing; they are all better talented QBs, so his spot will always be outshined by these guys. But can he be a Jeff Garcia type guy, who can get the job done, and have several very good years? I truthfully believe he can.
Last season Ponder completed 62% of his passes, with 18 TDs but his yards per attempt was awful at only a pitiful 6.1, which ranked him 31st in the league, this is the number he needs to improve the most. He needs to pull the trigger and get the ball moving downfield, AP can handle a boatload of work, but there will be times, when the game is going to be won by the QB, and Ponder needs to be the guy to put the team on his back and take them 90 yards to win a game.
Matt Cassel behind Ponder will and ought to keep him on his toes as well. Cassel may not be superstar, or he would have been a starter for his career, but he obviously has talent and can put up some numbers, it was only a few short years ago the big QB had games of 257 and 4 TDs in 2011 vs Indy and 314 and 3 TDs vs Tennessee in 2010, Cassel is another guy who can get the job done.
I fully expect the Vikes to improve on their 23.7 ppg from last year with the additional offense, and the extra year for Ponder. This is the year he needs to establish he can and will be talented enough to do it.
