Matt Mitrione suspended; Hasnt “seen a man beat a woman like that since Chris Brown beat Rihanna”

Matt Mitrione is fresh off a victory at UFC on FUEL TV 9, where he absolutely dominated Phillip De Fries with a 19 second KO in the first round.  But that’s not why he’s in the news today.

Appearing on the “MMA Hour,” Mitrione had some choice words about Fallon Fox.  Fox is the first trans-gendered individual to fight in MMA.  Formerly a man, Fox had surgery to become a woman, revealed her story to Sports Illustrated and didn’t admit to being formerly a man until after a victory against Ericka Newsome.  In that fight, Fox won with a Muay Thai clinch and landed a knee to the head against Newsome.  Newsome was knocked out in just 39 seconds.  After the fight it was revealed that Fox had the gender reassignment surgery and was now a woman participating in the women’s division.

Mitrione’s interview discussed a number of issues, his recent victory being one of them.  But when the topic of Fox came up, Mitrione had some choice words about the fighter.

“I have not seen a man beat a woman like that since Chris Brown beat Rihanna.”  Mitrione is quoted as saying.  He continued: “That is a lying, sick, socio-pathic, disgusting freak, and I mean that. Because you lied on your license to beat up women. That’s disgusting. You should be embarrassed yourself.”

One man’s opinion is another man’s outrage.  That’s not to say he was right or wrong, just in this day and age we’re always ready to shame someone for voicing their opinion.  I dont agree with his words, but in the spirit of freedom of speech, I don’t see what he did wrong other than just having a stupid opinion.

The UFC got wind of the interview and promptly suspended Mitrione, releasing a statement on Monday:

“The UFC was appalled by the transphobic comments made by heavyweight Matt Mitrione today in an interview on the ‘MMA Hour.’

“The organization finds Mr. Mitrione’s comments offensive and wholly unacceptable and — as a direct result of this significant breach of the UFC’s code of conduct – Mr. Mitrione’s UFC contract has been suspended and the incident is being investigated.

“The UFC is a friend and ally of the LGBT community, and expects and requires all 450 of its athletes to treat others with dignity and respect.”

Mitrione has become a sort of a fan favorite with his energy and humor.  But his comments on Monday left a sour taste in the mouth of even his most devout fans.  He’ll recover, the only thing Americans love more than chiding someone is a story of redemption.  His fight on Saturday showed he’s on his way back up the rankings but his mouth showed that he still has much to learn.
