Saints head coach to serve 1-year suspension
- Updated: March 21, 2012
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has been informed by the NFL that he will be suspended without pay for the 2012-13 football season following an investigation into the Saint’s bounty program in which players were paid money for injuring opposing players. Because the bounty program happened under Payton’s watch, he took the brunt of the discipline handed down. Saints GM Mickey Loomis will also be suspended eight games while former defensive coordinator Greg Williams will be suspended indefinitely. The team was also fined $500,000 and will forfeit their second round draft picks in 2012 and 2013. In recent years the NFL has taken many measures to protecting players from injury; therefore, the harsh suspension comes to no surprise.
