Sugar Bowl win has Sooners riding high
- Updated: January 10, 2014
The college football postseason has recently wrapped up, so the opportunity arises for fans and observers to reflect upon some of the memorable games which bowl season had to offer. One of the most memorable of all the bowl games was the Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, a game in which the Oklahoma Sooners stunned the heavily favored third-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide 45-31. Such an outcome was entirely unforeseen from the outside for a multitude of reasons, most notably because of the reputations of the two opposing teams. Many had figured that the Crimson Tide would steamroll the Sooners because of an eagerness to prove a point, to prove to fans and observers that their loss to Auburn on a miraculous final play of regulation was simply a fluke and not indicative in any way whatsoever of a weakness. In spite of some fans’ anticipation the Tide would assert its dominance, Oklahoma met the challenge head on and was lifted by the unexpectedly tremendous individual performance of redshirt freshman QB Trevor Knight. Knight’s magnificent performance was one of the most unexpected aspects of OU’s very surprising victory.
Understandably the most discussed storyline in the aftermath of OU’s unanticipated resounding triumph over the Tide was the stellar play of Sooners’ QB Trevor Knight. Knight had frustrated OU fans and supporters all season long with maddening inconsistencies in his play mainly attributable to his youth and inexperience. Fans and outside observers had largely anticipated Knight to be facing an uphill battle and struggling immensely against the much acclaimed defensive prowess of coach Nick Saban and Alabama. Yet Knight put any reservations surrounding him securely to rest, stunning many by throttling the Crimson Tide and guiding his Sooners to a decisive victory. Many had anticipated that Knight might crack under the immense pressure, under the inevitable relentless onslaught sure to be hurled his way. But he simply demonstrated an unflappable poise and command, maintaining his composure and delivering pinpoint passes on target in the face of blanket coverage. Not only was it a tremendous Sugar Bowl victory for OU, but the mammoth triumph undoubtedly promises to catapult the Sooners to a fantastic campaign next season.
The Sooners’ unexpectedly resounding and emphatic triumph over the Tide undeniably sends Oklahoma to the offseason riding a great wave of momentum. OU figures to be regarded as among the most legitimate national title contenders, and QB Trevor Knight appears to have launched his name toward the forefront of the early Heisman Trophy discussion.
